The Almanara Collection Art Residency in Montoro, Spain
My Month at the Almanara Collection Artist Residency in Montoro, Spain
Spending a month in Montoro, Spain, overlooking a stunning cityscape, was an unforgettable experience. The blend of immersing myself in the rich culture and dedicating a month exclusively to my artistic research through plein-air painting was invaluable. David and his family warmly welcomed me, treating me like one of their own. They frequently checked in, showed us around the town, and graciously invited us to lunch.
Montoro is a picturesque town, intimate and surrounded by endless olive groves, with countless nooks to explore. Additionally, it is just a short bus ride to the larger city of Córdoba, where I spent time exploring Islamic, Christian, and Roman sites. I left the residency with a substantial collection of paintings and a deepened appreciation for Spanish food, culture, dance, and way of life.
Immersed in Montoro’s Charm
From the moment I arrived, Montoro's charm was evident. The town’s labyrinthine streets, flanked by whitewashed buildings adorned with colorful tiles, seemed like scenes from a painting. Every corner of Montoro presented a new perspective, a fresh challenge for my plein-air sessions. The ever-changing light played on the olive groves and the Guadalquivir River, offering endless inspiration for my work.
The Heart of Andalusian Culture
Meeting with David and his family was a unique highlight of the residency. Their warmth and hospitality made me feel like a part of the local community. They introduced me to the rich tapestry of Andalusian culture. From savoring traditional dishes like salmorejo and flamenquín to learning about the intricate steps of flamenco dance, every day was a cultural immersion.
Learning about the history and traditions of Montoro and Andalusia were invaluable. These experiences enriched my understanding of the cultural context in which I was creating my art.
Artistic Growth and Exploration
The focus on plein-air painting allowed me to explore and capture the essence of Montoro's landscape and architecture directly on my canvas. The residency provided ample time and space to experiment with techniques and styles, leading to a substantial collection of paintings by the end of the month.
The tranquility of Montoro’s surroundings was conducive to introspection and creative growth. Without the distractions of daily life, I found myself more attuned to my artistic impulses. The olive groves, with their gnarled trunks and silvery leaves, became a recurring motif in my work.
Exploring Beyond Montoro
Being just a short bus ride away from Córdoba expanded the horizons of my residency. Córdoba, with its rich confluence of Islamic, Christian, and Roman influences, was a treasure trove of inspiration. Visiting the Mezquita, with its forest of columns and ornate mihrab, was a profound experience.
