The Lesser Lights
14x18 inches - oil on linen - 2024
There are a couple of different descriptions of the Lesser Lights. My working definition is that the Lesser Lights are as far as one can go and still return from. Beyond the Lesser Lights, we become severed from our physical bodies.
By omitting a conventional horizon line, I aimed to amplify the symbolic depth between the sea and the sky. As one delves into the psyche, the distinct separation of the intellect/ego (sky) and instinct/unconscious (water) blurs, giving rise to a rich, ambiguous mental landscape perfect for exploration
"We have been to the moon, we have charted the depths of the ocean and the heart of the atom, but we have a fear of looking inward to ourselves because we sense that is where all the contradictions flow together." -Terence McKenna
